The County Town

Dingwall Mart

Between the 18th and 19th century, agriculture started changing and commercial farming became more dominent, this resulted in more trade being done in Dngwall, this caused better roads to be built, all leading to the town being recognised as County Town in 1843.

The council held a meeting in 1884 about constructing a Mart, it's first sale was held on 5th August 1884. In 1890 the railway arrived in Dingwall along with a new mart, and in 1891 the mart started holding weekly sales.

The mart has been under the control of several companies since then, but in 1992 they became one company in the form of Dingwall Auction Mart Ltd. Then in 1995 they became Dingwall & UA Partnershop Ltd. when UA closed their mart in Inverness. Again in 2000, the company change to become Dingwall Auction Mart Ltd, and in 2002 became Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., who went on to construct a new modern mart at Humberston Farm, Pitglassie on the southern edge of the town. The orignail site was sold to Tesco who replaced the aging supermarket with a modern superstore in the centre of the town.
